Villa Rufolo

Ravello

A natural terrace on infinity

The terraces of Villa Rufolo and Villa Cimbrone, from which a breathtaking panorama can be admired, enchanted Greta Garbo and Wagner, in whose honor the International Music Festival is held each year, making Ravello the city of music on the Amalfi Coast. A quiet and chic town, it was a thriving center of commercial activity as early as the 11th and 12th centuries. It is a terrace jutting out over the sea in the Lattari Mountains, from which there is a unique backdrop of natural beauty. From its belvederes, particularly the one dedicated to the Princess of Piedmont, the Divine Coast presents itself in a dreamlike vision. Surrounded by dazzling nature, perched in an evocative position on a rocky spur that divides the valley of the Dragone stream from that of the Reginna stream in one of the widest viewpoints of the gulf, it dominates from a height of 350 meters the blue sea of the Divine Coast.
Ravellese is the protagonist of one of Giovanni Boccaccio's most beautiful novellas in the "Decameron": Landolfo Rufolo, nobleman by birth, pirate by choice, shipwrecked by fortune and, finally, by skill and good fortune, happy owner of an immense treasure. The sketches of the Amalfi Coast that the great English painter William Turner made in 1819 are on display at the Tate Gallery in London. Prominent among its art treasures are the Duomo, founded in the 12th century; Villa Rufolo, whose origins date back to the 11th century, with its indescribable flower-filled terraces and home to the Festival's cliff-top stage; and Villa Cimbrone, famous for its thrilling Belvedere, from which the world's most beautiful panorama can be enjoyed; Moresca Fountain Square and, completing the picture, the evocative web of narrow streets, which emanate charm and captivate visitors, transporting them to another dimension, that of dreams, accompanied by music even at dawn, with the traditional concert.
