On the Amalfi Coast, love rhymes with...Furore

AGAINST THE BACKDROP OF THE ENCHANTED FJORD OF FURORE, THE TORMENTED LOVE STORY BETWEEN MAGNANI AND ROSSELLINI

29-September-2013

In a previous article devoted to the beautiful Campanian village of Furore (Salerno), we recalled how its more recent history is mainly linked to the 1940s, when Furore, always a place dear to the gods, was the scene of the tormented love affair between Roberto Rossellini and Anna Magnani.

The celebrated director among Wrath e Maiori spun in those years The Miracle*, the second episode of the film "Love" (the other episode is 'A Human Voice'). Anna Magnani, then romantically linked to the director, was the performer in the same film.

The one at Wrath was for both of them aexperience in which idyll and clash merged, until the abrupt termination of their relationship with the appearance on the horizon of the Swedish actress Ingrid Bergman. A small museum dedicated to them is now housed in one of the little houses in the fjord (Villa della Storta Permanent Museum).

(...)Although passionate, the love between Magnani and Rossellini was also quarrelsome. Furores still remember that evening when at the Bacchus Inn, where the two lovers used to go up to enjoy the dishes of Donna Letizia, the "sweet and beautiful" Nannarella slammed in the face of Rossellini a dish of "ferrazzuoli" to "piennolo" cherry tomatoes, having just discovered an exchange of telegrams with a "certain Ingrid Bergman".

In a letter sent to the director, Bergman wrote, "Dear Mr. Rossellini, I saw your films 'Roma città aperta' and 'Paisà' and enjoyed them very much. If you need a Swedish actress who speaks English very well, who has not forgotten German, can hardly be understood in French, and in Italian can say 'I love you,' I am ready to come to Italy to work with you."
